General Election 2019

We are delighted to have Andrew Baker as the Conservative Party candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

Some words from him below:

A local voice for Bermondsey

I live in and love Bermondsey. It is one of the most fantastically exciting, diverse and enchanting parts of our great capital. However, for far too long it has been the Labour / Lib Dem story here and it's time to shake things up.

It's time to give the voters of Bermondsey & Old Southwark a real alternative to Neil Coyle: a passionate and modern form of Conservatism that is democratic and will deliver Brexit and has the environment, opportunity and economic competency at its core.

My Priorities

As a local Bermondsey resident, it's clear to me that the Labour / Lib Dem dominated council has failed to build the homes people need. I will work with the government to build homes that locals can genuinely afford. I also want to fight to support renters and crack down on rogue landlords.

As a school governor at two local primary schools and a volunteer at a local charity that helps young people find career success, my passion is education and giving children the best start in life. I want to fight Labour's plans to end the academy programme and scrap OFSTED.

As someone whose first political memory is delivering World Wildlife Fund leaflets with my Dad as a kid, I am a passionate environmentalist. Southwark has the worst air pollution in London and I will support efforts to improve air quality, back clean public transport and fight to address the greatest crisis of our age: climate change.

Someone who has built a successful professional career in the private sector

I am proud of my career in law which has seen me advise major FTSE 100 companies as well as work with some amazing charities. I am also grateful to have worked in the City of London - the global leading financial centre, a place of innovation and opportunity, a driver of economic growth across the UK and, sadly, something that would be at stake under a Corbyn government.

Most importantly though, I am proud of the opportunities that my career has given me to help others. Whether it was volunteering as a tutor to local students in one of the most deprived parts of London as part of a pro bono scheme or becoming a mentor to those starting out in their legal careers, I have always placed my passion for education and equality of opportunity at the centre of my professional career.

A Seasoned Campaigner

From campaigning against Scottish independence to fighting local elections here in Bermondsey, I have a long experience of campaigning and I am excited to bring my relentless energy and passion to this election.

I will be out and about throughout this election with the members and supporters of the Conservatives in Bermondsey and Old Southwark and I do hope you can join us!
